Birds
Dr. Stewart White from the University of Glasgow has conducted ornithological research in the Payamino area every summer since 2001. This research consists of an ongoing species census, an ongoing capture-recapture study and a number of undergraduate final year projects.
The ornithological work is completed using three interlinked methods: Mist netting, observations and sound recordings. When capturing birds using the mist netting, individuals have been identified to species and sexed if possible as well as biometrical measurements taken and birds marked with a unique ring. The visual observations are made using the MacKinnon’s List Technique.

Overall the results have shown a huge variety of birds in the area including 28 out of 31 pristine habitat indicator species. Overall 255 species have been identified during 2227 captures.
The ornithological work continues during the University of Glasgow expedition (June-July) and field course (September). If you are interested in finding out more about the opportunities available to visit the Payamino you are welcome to contact us for more information.
