A tour to San Jose de Payamino will allow you to see real life of an indigenous Amazonian community, working to conserve some of the finest primary lowland rainforest in Ecuador. Tours can be made to measure depending on your requirements, but we normally would recommend a 4 night/5 day tour. We can run tours with a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 12, guided by Payamino Runas, experts at survival in the jungle and masters of their territory.San Jose de Payamino offers a number of unmissable attractions, includeing the higher reaches of the Payamino River, where the landscape changes as you enter the Sumaco mountain range and the river enters deep, misty canyons where ferns, mosses and orchids coat the rocks and we can discover waterfalls, hidden caves, pools of bubbling water and natural oil wells. Downriver we can visit the fincas, traditional Kichwa farms, where you can stay with a local family to learn about medicinal plants, drink chicha (fermented manioc juice) and wayusa tea, learn about the myths an legends of San Jose de Payamino, have a healing ceremony with the community’s shaman and try your luck panning for gold. Finally, in the extensive primary rainforest areas of the territory you can climb the armadillo hill for stunning views over the Amazon basin, visit the 40-metre tall waterfall on the Ahuano River and, if you are really lucky, bump into wildlife such as tapirs, armadillos, snakes, macaws and much, much more.
