Sumaco National Park
Part of the territory of San Jose de Payamino lies in the bufferzone of the Sumaco-Galeras National Park.
The park is located in both the provinces of Napo and Orellana and the core areas covers an extension of 207,040 hectares, of which 11,761 hectares belongs to the Napo–Galeras area and 195,279 hectares to the Sumaco area.
The park was declared a Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO in year 2000 and with the bufferzones, the whole area covers 996,436 hectares.
The park is situated roughly in the middle of the Ecuadorian Amazon between the 500 and 3732 m elevation and an annual rainfall between 2000-6000 mm. This means you can expect to find plenty of variety. The majority of the flora is subtropical jungle or forest and there are a number of Andean rivers running through the park. In the lower areas you can find lowland species as giant armadillos, jaguars, bears, parakeets, peccaries, ocelots and deer.
The park is difficult to access and almost no agencias offers tours to the park. There is a national park office in San Jose de Payamino. To enter the park there is a small admission fee for the visitors.
